Sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum
Along with sun-ripened tomatoes, sweet basil just has to be The Smell of Summer.
Basil loves to grow in clumps in sheltered sunny spots. Plant a few close together, to create a microclimate between the stems. And avoid watering in the evening: damp and chill makes for fungal infections.
